Stress isn’t something that only happens to humans. All animals experience stress at some point, from puppies getting crate trained to Tripawds who are just returning home from surgery. Stress and nervous behavior can result in anything from unusual aggression to stomach upset.
While there are various pharmaceutical drugs available to help curb your dog’s anxiety, such as Clomicalm or Reconcile, you may want to start off by investigating natural stress relievers first, such as Rescue Remedy Natural Stress Relief for Pets.
What’s Rescue Remedy?
Dr. Edward Bach, a homeopathic practitioner from England during the early part of the 20th century, became known for this theory that harnessing natural elements from nature, especially flower essences, can result in remedies for various ailments. Bach’s school of thought places an importance on treating the feelings and personalities of patients, instead of only addressing the physical ailments troubling them.
Bach created 38 tinctures from flower essences that work to reverse the effect of negative, harmful emotions. These tinctures do not include the actual plant material, but the healing energy that Bach intuitively felt each flower emitted. Various remedies can be combined to suit individual needs for humans and dogs.
Rescue Remedy Natural Stress Relief for Pets contains five of the original 38 Bach Flower Essences:
- Rock Rose for terror and panic
- Impatiens for irritation and impatience
- Clematis for inattentiveness
- Star of Bethlehem for shock
- Cherry Plum for irrational thoughts
How Rescue Remedy Works
Upon the first signs of stress and anxiety, administering Rescue Remedy can alleviate symptoms and prevent a severe emotional crisis from happening. It can also help alleviate grief when a companion pet dies. As a homeopathic remedy it’s so safe it can be given with any other conventional medications. Flower essences are a safe, benign option and the only effect an overdose will have is that it will simply not work at all.
Rescue Remedy Natural Stress Relief for Pets comes in both liquid tincture and cream form.
Rescue Remedy Dosage
Tinctures can be give one of three ways. By placing four to six drops (depending on size of the dog) directly on the tongue is the most accurate but you can also put them on a treat or add it to water. Giving more than six drops at a time will not harm your dog, but also won’t help either.Rescue Remedy can also be mixed with water, and sprayed on or around the dog for a calming effect.
As a cream, Rescue Remedy be applied topically to sensitive skin areas, such as in the ears, armpits or groin. It can also be used as a salve for dry, cracked paws.
Bach’s suggests using it for a minimum five days. For stressful, ongoing situations, it can be used for 14 days or longer. If you don’t see visible results, other Bach’s Flower Essences for animals should be investigated or you should consult with a holistic practitioner who can help in choosing the right one.
