Spirit Tika’s Omega-3 Salmon Treat Recipe

Treats are the latest hot topic around Tripawds these days, and recipes are flying left and right.

Whether you’re into healthy grain-free treats for your Tripawd who’s fighting cancer, or an anything-goes sugar-laden delectables for your three legged sweetie, there’s lots to choose from.

Let’s start with Spirit Tika’s Omega Dog Cookie Recipe.

These tasty treats were a hit at the 2009 Tripawds pawty in Colorado. When all was said and done we had nearly 30 dogs with fishy breath and full bellies!

The recipe calls for whole wheat flour but you can use any kind of gluten-free, low carb flour, such as garbanzo flour, rice flour, etc.

These treats are great because they include parsley and dill, which are well known for their properties in aiding digestion. They also include egg shells, which are great sources of calcium. And of course, salmon and flax are high in Omega-3s.

Spirit Tika’s Omega Dog Cookies

  • 1 can salmon with juice (8 oz.)
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp dill weed
  • 3 eggs — shells included
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds ground up in coffee grinder
  • 1/2 cup flax seeds ground up in coffee grinder
  • 2 (or more) cups whole wheat flour (gluten free flour will also work, it’s just to give the cookies some holding power)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F (190° C).

  1. Put all ingredients into a food processor and mix very well.
  2. Pour flour through the opening while the processor is on. Use enough flour to make the dough about the consistency of a pie crust (it will roll into a ball – once it does, it’s ready to remove.) (Alternative: Use a blender to chop up salmon, herbs and eggs, pour into bowl and mix in other ingredients, add flour until easy to roll out.)
  3. Place on a floured surface and knead more flour into dough until it is easily rolled out. Roll out to about quarter inch thick. Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Poke each cookie with a fork once or twice, so that cookies will not puff up. Bake on cookie sheets that have a nonstick spray coating.
  4. Bake for 20 min. Turn and rotate cookie sheets, then bake about 10 more minutes.

Note by Kim and Tika:

You are working with salmon, soooooo….you might want to crack open a window while you are making these if you are not that fond of a strong fish smell (the doggies won’t mind a bit, promise)

We recommend using organic products and wash herbs and eggs.

While you are grinding up flax, grind up some for yourself and make fruit smoothies with it (yay YOU). I found, oddly enough, that the Magic Bullet is AWESOME in grinding up seeds.

Most larger grocery stores have an organic section that you can find these ingredients in. Cost a little more, but not significantly because this makes a BUNCH of cookies.

Prep Time is about 30 minutes I would guess, but I’ve been batch processing the seeds.

If you have access to low fat organic yogurt chips (like choco-chips) slow melt those and dip the cookies in them for an extra treat, carob will work well also.
